About

Journey to Jazz is an annual Karoo festival drawing inspiration from the history, art and natural environment of the Prince Albert desert. This intimate and bespoke experience offers a week of music, masterclasses, food and nature all at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A full programme of local and international artists perform throughout the town in restaurants, on farms and in churches. The locals of Prince Albert curate a community events programme which sees visitors camping under the stars, doing yoga at sunrise and walking the Wolvekraal Conservancy.

Journey to Jazz is a showcase event of the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT). It is a culmination of the Leadership Development work that takes place throughout the year with youth who are affiliated with the PACT community centre in Prince Albert. Journey to Jazz is conceptualized and driven by PACT and a crew of more than 80 young people of the region. Through ongoing training in hospitality, event management, media and life skills, local youth welcome visitors from around the country and globe to experience a true Karoo fees!

"Lots of feedback: brilliant event. Especially loved the vibe from younger people: helping at venue, photographing etc. Well done on this. Loved the masterclasses taking us out of the cute village to the more real places. Most of the concerts I attended were amazing. I do worry about developing audiences and therefore loved the UCT Little Big Band, Women of the World etc whose music could be accessible to non-avant garde audiences .Loved the street busking and the Trappies: my first time: more more more Loved Women of the World, UCT Little Big Band, Adam Zandolinie, Community Philharmonic, GIovanni Guido, Juliette Price. Feelings about other concerts: respect the audience- if you can say "we would have done this without you" - I say yes I know: we felt that - you lost us midway and just jammed and it was horrible and also felt unprofessional and disrespectful of the audience. Play your hour. dont go on and on and on. Could do better: media engagement on Instagram. Engage with people who tag you. Plain old bicycles for those who just want a 5 km bike ride on the flat. Nothing fancy. Some of us dont understand or won fancy bikes. Could also do: walkabout in town and the township: focus on architecture and social geography. Break the divide. Loved the masterclasses and would have attended a concert there as well. More inclusive and colourful concerts: could we not allocate /10 tickets for each show and a shuttle to being in less priveleged? I had a beauty treatment with someone at one of the establishments: she would love to have attended the last day with her family. Didnt know much about prices etc. I would start by enlightening, in detail, the staff: cleaning and upwards and giving tickets and transport if necessary to them and families to the more accessible concerts. Will be back next year. Thanks to all the organisers and musicians. "
