About

Journey to Jazz is an annual Karoo festival drawing inspiration from the history, art and natural environment of the Prince Albert desert. This intimate and bespoke experience offers a week of music, masterclasses, food and nature all at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A full programme of local and international artists perform throughout the town in restaurants, on farms and in churches. The locals of Prince Albert curate a community events programme which sees visitors camping under the stars, doing yoga at sunrise and walking the Wolvekraal Conservancy.

Journey to Jazz is a showcase event of the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT). It is a culmination of the Leadership Development work that takes place throughout the year with youth who are affiliated with the PACT community centre in Prince Albert. Journey to Jazz is conceptualized and driven by PACT and a crew of more than 80 young people of the region. Through ongoing training in hospitality, event management, media and life skills, local youth welcome visitors from around the country and globe to experience a true Karoo fees!

"Excellent organisation with a team of young people doing excellently. Well-chosen authors with an extremely interesting programme and presenters. The bookshop was effective with friendly owners and staff, and well stocked!"

"We saw two acts. Adam Zanolini and Giuliette Price. Both were excellent. The organisation was excellent. Perhaps a quicket or whatsapp group to communicate current happenings during the event would be good, ie. If there are still tickets available for certain acts, this could be sent out the night before and the day of the event to people who have booked shows so they dont have to hunt through all the sold out shows on Quicket to find an extra show which takes v long. When coming in to the Showroom Theatre for info, the wait to be helped was very long. I eventually left without being helped. Only one knowledgeable person was insufficient. I may well have gone to see a few more shows if I could have seen some reviews by audience members after an act's first show particularly as the video footage was often minimal so deciding who to see was not always so easy.Thoroughly enjoyed however and the shows I attended were well organised and controlled. Also there was a very welcoming atmosphere which added to the enjoyment. Well done. I would love to attend the next one and get a weekend pass next time!"

"We thoroughly enjoyed 3 Concerts at Prince Albert over the weekend. The Trout Quintet on Friday evening in the Showroom Theatre was exquisitely beautiful! We also enjoyed the warm sounds of the string - ensemble on Saturday afternoon . We would have enjoyed it even more if more popular music was played . The Concert in Prince Albert’s Dutch Reformed Church was the highlight of the weekend . Lynelle Kenned was such a joy both as a Presenter and an excellent Soprano with a perfect pitch of even the highest notes. The Oudtshoorn Choir was exceptionally good and well balanced and we heard beautiful choir sounds ! We enjoyed the songs familiar to us the most. The idea of having the Swartberg Salon Music Festival regularly on a yearly basis is very exciting , especially if overseas artists can contribute again ! Bravo!"
