Umuthiomkhulu Ensemble is a South African Spiritual Jazz collective, rooted in ancestral sound and creative freedom. Founded and led by trombonist and composer Mthimkhulu Stuurman, the Ensemble has spent over four years shaping a powerful and deeply spiritual sound that bridges traditional African music and contemporary jazz.

Guided by the mentorship of Dr Johnny Mekoa and inspired by Malcolm Jiyane, Mthimkhulu draws on his belief in the ancestors as the foundation of his music, a living conversation between past and present. His musical journey has seen him collaborate with both South African and international artists, including Prince Lengoasa, Mthunzi Mvubu, The Spam All Stars (USA), The Temptations (USA), DJ Ed Noodles (Europe), Koh Mr Saxman (Thailand), and Alexander Beets.

With performances at festivals and venues such as Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, AfrikaBurn, Gallery MOMO, Selective Live, The Commons (Muizenberg), MOJO Market, and Sandton Convention Centre, Umuthiomkhulu continues to expand its reach through national tours —including Cape Town Tours (2023 & 2024) and a Johannesburg Tour (2024).

Representing the name Umuthiomkhulu, “The Big Tree”, the Ensemble stands as a symbol of growth, rootedness, and spiritual connection, offering music that heals, uplifts, and resonates beyond borders.
