ABOUT

Also new to the Cape Town Adventure Film Festival program in 2020, the CYCLING | MTB NIGHT features a collection of high action and adventurous bike stories from some of the most insane landscapes the world over. We're super excited to present this new collection of cycling films and look forward to it becoming a longstanding event at CTAFF in years to come.

Films include:

Chasing The Yeti

In 2001, the Kingdom of Bhutan created the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a 253-square-mile protected habitat for the migoi, known in the west as the yeti. The sanctuary is also home to pandas, snow leopards and tigers, but the Bhutanese maintain that the refuge was created specifically for the migoi. This exclusive region has long been off-limits to most outsiders, but in April 2019, professional mountain bikers Darren Berrecloth, Casey Brown and Cam McCaul led the first team to ever ride bikes in this hidden corner of the Himalaya. Their eight-day journey in search of the yeti led them through some of the world’s most stunning, high-altitude singletrack while also bringing awareness to a country that bases its GDP on ‘happiness,’ rather than financial indicators.

Rideable

Two cheap bikes. A surfboard. And 250-miles of human-powered travel to find good surf. One grand adventure! All Rideable! From the city of Portland to the Oregon Coast and back. A film by Steven Mortinson and Brian Donnelly.

RJ Ripper

Rajesh Magar has been obsessed with bikes since he was a small child growing up in Kathmandu, Nepal. When the other kids were studying, he’d be dreaming about, designing and drawing bikes. As the son of a construction worker and housemaid, however, a bike wasn’t easy to come by. Undeterred, he built one, a clunky Frankenstein, but a mountain bike nonetheless. He started racing, and his drive and raw talent got noticed, leading to a job as a mountain bike guide and a path to professional racing. Today, Nepal’s National Champion is living proof that it pays to stick to your passion, no matter how implausible it seems.
