TITLE: STRIP SHOW – “A few things I learned about graphic storytelling in over 20 years of drawing funny pictures”
OUTLINE:
Less of a workshop than a rambling, hopefully an informative and funny talk…
Covering Principles of humour, character, storytelling, knowing your audience and working to a brief – followed by question and answer session.
DURATION: 4 HOURS
PRICE: R500 / R295 (STUDENTS)
SESSION 1:
• Principles of humour – timing, surprise, anticipation, relationships
• Principles of character design – function, relationships,
• stereotypes etc.
• Every picture tells a story – some ideas on visual storytelling – manipulating time and action on static, two-dimensional space
SESSION 2:
• WTF is going on here? – Clear, unambiguous storytelling,
• shortcuts, show- not tell etc
• Aspects of working to brief – know your client, know your audience, working for kids.
• Have fun with it! – Closing remarks.

BIO
Rico Schacherl is best known as the co-creator and artist of Madam &
Eve, South Africa’s most popular comic strip for over 20 years. Rico
also does editorial cartoons, children’s book and magazine
illustrations, TV and animation design, comics and illustrations for
literacy awareness and science education projects, infographics -
working for clients and publications as far ranging as the USA,
Switzerland, France and South Korea ... always trying to inject as
much humour and fun into his work as possible.
