TALK TITLE: Writing stories & characters to care about
OUTLINE:
Whether it’s for film or comics, all stories have similar structural elements and ultimately the same end goal – engaging the audience with an interesting character. Building on from his experiences working on the animated films Zambezia and Khumba, Anthony Silverston will look at the tools (not rules) to create stories that grab the reader’s attention from beginning to end, and well-rounded characters that leap off the page.
DURATION: 4 hours

Session 1:
The basics of story structure, covering some different methodologies to create an engaging story; the importance of emotional storytelling; and writing within a genre.
Session 2:
Focusing on character - how to create a well-rounded, unique character with a strong character arc with whom the reader will connect.
BIO
Anthony Silverston is a partner and Head of Development at Triggerfish Animation Studios in South Africa. He is director and co-writer of Khumba, which premiered in competition at Annecy International Animation Festival 2013. It screened at a number of other international Festivals and won two Gold Panda Awards in China. Silverston was also one of the writers and producers of Triggerfish’s first feature Zambezia and completed three independent stop-motion shorts, one of which, The Slipper Cycle, won Best Independent Animation at The Independents’ Film Festival in Florida. In 2014, Silverston was selected to be on the Jury of the prestigious animation festival in Annecy. He also holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) which has come in handy while developing Triggerfish’s third original IP with his co-writer Raffaella Delle Donne about a young science geek who discovers a Sea Monster off the coast of Southern Africa.
