ABOUT
28 NOVEMBER 2026 | CINEMA MEETS CEREMONY
Join us for another edition of Afro Visionary Movie Nights, our celebration of African independent cinema, storytelling and music.
For our November screening, we turn our attention to Sudanese-Russian filmmaker Suzannah Mirghani, presenting two thought-provoking short films that explore womanhood, tradition, power, identity and the complexities of contemporary culture.
ON THE SCREEN
AL-SIT (2020)
20 minutes | Sudan/Qatar
In a cotton-farming village in Sudan, 15-year-old Nafisa has a crush on Babiker, but her parents have arranged her marriage to Nadir, a young Sudanese businessman living abroad. Her grandmother Al-Sit, the powerful village matriarch, has plans of her own for Nafisa's future. But can Nafisa choose for herself?
A compelling exploration of tradition, generational power, womanhood and the right to determine one's own future.
VIRTUAL VOICE (2021)
7 minutes | Sudan/Qatar
A satirical reflection on digital activism, online outrage and the politics of social media. Through Suzi Doll, an online avatar driven by trending indignation, Mirghani challenges the performative nature of virtual activism and asks whether our digital voices are truly making a difference or simply echoing the injustices we claim to oppose.
