A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols with VOX (2026)
Sun Dec 6, 11:00 - Sun Dec 6, 12:15
St Andrew's Presbyterian Church
ABOUT
A cherished musical tradition, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols traces the story of salvation, from the fall of humanity and the ancient promise of a Messiah to the wonder and radiance of Christ's birth. Each December, VOX brings its own distinctive voice to this beloved tradition at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, continuing the rich musical legacy of Barry Smith and the St George's Singers in a service infused with light and hope.
This year, we invite you once again on a musical journey across centuries, cultures and continents in which familiar carols are heard afresh alongside unexpected musical discoveries. The programme weaves together carols such as In dulci jubilo, Gabriel's Message, Ríu, ríu, chíu, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging and the Carol of the Bells, alongside much-loved hymns including Once in Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Hark! The Herald-Angels Sing.
At its heart is the first performance of How a Wildflower Blooms, a South African reimagining of the beloved German carol Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming), specially commissioned from award-winning local composer Lize Briel. In this new work, an ancient European rose takes root in South African soil, giving fresh expression to the promise of hope and renewal.
After the service, linger with us over mince pies as we share in the warmth and joy of the season. Admission is free but bookings and donations in support of the music are warmly encouraged.
