Sankayi Presents welcomes South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela on Thursday, 8 October.
Simply known as “The Voice” in South Africa, Vusi Mahlasela is celebrated for his distinct, powerful voice and poetic, optimistic lyrics. Raised in Mamelodi, where he still resides, Vusi became a singer-songwriter and poet-activist at an early age, teaching himself guitar before joining the Congress of South African Writers. Following his debut on BMG Africa with When You Come Back, he was invited to perform at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration in 1994. His career has taken him around the world, sharing stages with Dave Matthews Band, Sting, Paul Simon, Josh Groban, Ray LaMontagne, Natalie Merchant and Taj Mahal. In 2003, Dave Matthews signed Vusi to ATO Records, leading to the release of his music in North America.
Vusi has released ten albums over the last two decades, including Shebeen Queen, a celebration of the vibrant musical culture of his hometown, first encountered at his grandmother’s shebeen. His latest album, Umoya, released in September 2023, was his first studio album of new songs in 13 years. Recorded at Flame Studios at Constitution Hill and produced by multiple Grammy Award winner JB Arthur, the album marked a return to Vusi’s folk music roots. Umoya received two SAMA nominations and Grammy consideration for Best Global Music Album. Vusi continues to perform regularly in South Africa and internationally, including a notable performance with the Dave Matthews Band at SunBet Arena in December 2023.
