Mimi Mtshali

Sankayi Jazz Series welcomes acclaimed South African jazz vocalist, composer and lyricist Mimi Mtshali on Friday, 16 October.

Born in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, Mimi began performing at a very young age, singing at church and growing up in a home where music was always present. She pursued her music education at UCT, completing her Jazz Performance Degree, and has shared stages with some of South Africa’s leading artists, including Sibongile Khumalo, Judith Sephuma, Jimmy Dludlu and Themba Mkhize, as well as international artists including Khadja Nin, Rita Marley, Joe McBride and Lauryn Hill.

Her award-winning debut album, Essence Of My Soul, features warm tunes, beautiful melodies and deep African and Latin influences. Mimi has also been part of the UCT Philharmonic Orchestra, Tucan Tucan, Mamavox and the SAFRA Jazz Band, and has performed jazz classics by artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan with fresh arrangements and her distinctive vocal style. Her second offering, Your Love, features collaborations with Kirk Whalum, Moreira Chonguica, Pamela Myburgh, Jankie Makopa and Afurakan. Mimi is currently tutoring at Wits and continues to be a force on the music scene.
