Some are competing, and something is inconsistent — it holds together at home

and comes apart at the show.

Some have a young horse with real potential and don't want to get the next two

years wrong.

Some want a horse that is safe and good company on a hack, and nothing more

than that.

Some are rebuilding their own confidence, after a fall or after years away.

Some have been told for a long time that their horse is difficult, and have

never quite believed it.

And plenty arrive without a clear reason at all. They ride because they have

always ridden, and something could be better — they just couldn't say what.

None of those is a better reason to come than the others, and the last is not

a worse one.

WE START BY FINDING OUT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT

Every session begins the same way, before any work: we get clear on what you

are building with this horse, and it gets said out loud.

You cannot work toward a heading nobody has set. Most riders are not stuck for

lack of effort — they are working hard without a clear picture of what good

looks like for them and this horse.

If you don't know yet, that is the first thing we do together, and it is often

the most useful part of the day.

THEN WE WORK

You have probably been offered explanations that describe your horse's

character rather than his state. He's being disrespectful. She's testing you.

He knows better.

Maybe. But none of them tell you what to do on Tuesday.

Almost everything that looks like defiance is a horse whose nervous system has

arrived somewhere his training hasn't. He isn't arguing with you — he is

showing you where the gap is. Once you can see that, it stops being a fight and

becomes a sequence. A sequence is something you can work through.

Any discipline: dressage, western, trail, jumping, or a horse you simply want

to enjoy. Any level: green youngsters and thirty-year riders both.

TWO WAYS TO COME

Rider place — two sessions built around your heading, plus the full day

watching the other seven. Eight places only.

Auditor place — the full day, narrated as it happens. No horse needed. You hear

the reasoning, not just the result — and the horse that finally makes it click

is almost never your own.

Everyone leaves with a written plan: your heading, and the two things to work

first. 08:00 to 16+:00, and bring what you need for the day.

BEFORE YOU BOOK — THE PRACTICAL PART

Weather. A wet day is not a cancellation, so bring a jacket. We only move the

day if the ground or conditions would make the work genuinely unsafe — and if

that happens you will know a week ahead, not on the morning. The seven-day

forecast is reliable enough to call it, so the decision gets made the Saturday

before. The day moves rather than disappears: either to the Sunday, or to a

date the following month. If the new date does not suit you, you are refunded

in full.

Food and coffee. Not included in the ticket. Bring what you need for a full

day, or buy on the day.

Baboons. They are active around Tokai and they are bold and quick. Lock your

car and close the windows, keep food out of sight — including inside your box —

and do not leave feed bags, tack or handbags standing. If you have children

with you, keep them near you. Most people in Cape Town know the drill; it is

mentioned because they are noticeably active at this yard.

What to bring.

Riders:

• What you would work with at home
• Your horse in his normal tack
• A headcollar and lead rope
• Hay/Teff if you are from another yard
• Something to write with and take notes.

Auditors:

• A hat and something to sit through a long day in. (It is an outdoor clinic)
• Seating is inside the arena, on the shaded side.
• Something to write with and take notes.

Cancellations. Message me directly rather than cancelling through Quicket. My

terms are a sliding scale based on how much notice you give, and they are more

generous than a flat rule — full refund less a small admin fee more than 14

days out, and a free transfer to another clinic at any time right up to the
