A one-day, HPCSA-accredited workshop following the deceased donor pathway in sequence, from early identification and referral, through brain-death testing, organ retrieval and tissue donation, to the outcomes for the patients who receive them.
South Africa's deceased donor rate remains around 1.4 donors per million population, well below comparable countries. Much of that shortfall begins at the frontline, with potential donors going unrecognised or unreferred. This workshop is built to change that.
Who should attend
ICU and emergency clinicians, critical care nurses, medical officers, theatre staff, and paramedics.

- Early identification and physiological management of potential organ donors
- Brain death testing in South Africa
- Integrated organ retrieval and transplantation coordination
- The recipient after transplant: early course, graft function and outcomes
- Voices of transplantation: recipient and donor family stories
- Ethical decision-making and psychosocial support
- Tissue donation: the wider referral opportunity
Why this workshop is different
Frontline teams are asked to identify and refer potential donors, but rarely learn what became of the organs. This programme follows the pathway all the way through to the recipient, so that the case for early referral stops being abstract and becomes a clinical decision with a visible result.
