ABOUT
Linda Tshabalala — Convergence: Meet & Greet, CD Signing & Live Performance
The Living Archive and Jazz Is Dad invite you to an intimate afternoon with saxophonist, composer, educator and bandleader *Linda Tshabalala, celebrating her debut album, Convergence: Bekezela Siyeza.
For us, this is more than a CD signing. It is an opportunity to sit with an artist whose music speaks directly to the ideas at the heart of Jazz Is Dad: lineage, mentorship, memory and the passing of music from one generation to the next.
Linda Tshabalala was a student of the late Bra Johnny Mekoa, the celebrated trumpeter, educator and founder of the Music Academy of Gauteng. Mekoa was much more than a musician — he was a teacher and mentor who dedicated his life to developing musicians and keeping the discipline, knowledge and traditions of jazz alive for future generations.
That relationship is important to Linda's story.
Through her own music, she carries forward something of that tradition — not by simply recreating the past, but by taking what she learned and giving it her own voice. It is precisely this relationship between *teacher and student, father and child, past and future that resonates with the Jazz Is Dad project.
Released in 2021, Convergence: Bekezela Siyeza brings together the different worlds that have shaped Linda as a musician. Rooted in South African musical traditions while embracing contemporary jazz, the album moves through personal stories, African rhythms, spiritual reflection and memories of home, including a celebration of her Daveyton roots.
The album itself became a moment of creation during the first pandemic lockdown — a period when many musicians were forced away from stages and audiences. For Linda, music became a way of gathering together the ideas and compositions she had carried for years and finally giving them form.
At The Living Archive, we are interested in precisely these stories: not only the music, but where it comes from, who taught it, who carried it forward and what it becomes in the hands of the next generation.
Join us for a relaxed meet & greet with Linda Tshabalala, where she will talk about Convergence, her musical journey and the influence of the people and traditions that helped shape her.
Linda will also be signing copies of Convergence and performing a selection of songs from the album live.
Come meet the artist, hear the story behind the music and experience a little of the sound for yourself.
