Die Silwerskermfees eerbiedig sy verbintenis om gehore te ontwikkel deur die fees se reikwydte in en rondom Kaapstad uit te brei en uitgesoekte speelfilms aan gemeenskappe te vertoon. Dikwels is die gekose films geïnspireer deur, gebaseer op, of selfs vervaardig in die betrokke gemeenskappe – ’n manier vir die fees om aan die mense terug te gee.

The Silwerskerm Festival honours its commitment to develop audiences by extending the festival’s reach to in and around Cape Town by screening curated feature films to communities. Often the films selected have been informed by, inspired by or even produced in the chosen communities – a way for the festival to give back to the people.

Wanneer ’n motorongeluk sy ma se lewe eis en sy pa hom in ’n kliniek van die lewe onttrek, word die sewentienjarige Gabriel Lombard uit sy groen, boomryke voorstad teen Tafelberg ontwortel en gestuur om by sy antie Lotta en ouma Lenie in ’n beknopte huis in Woodstock te gaan woon. Vasbeslote om nie soos sy pa in duie te stort nie, begrawe hy sy verdriet agter ’n koel fasade, wilde leuens en ’n ooraktiewe verbeelding, waarin ’n Kaapse Klopse-blaasorkes hom deur die strate jaag. In terapie ontmoet hy vir Sasha en raak verlief op haar. Om nader aan haar te kom, word hy oorreed om aan die skool se slam-poësie-kompetisie deel te neem. Maar hoe nader die kompetisie kom, hoe harder beur sy onderdrukte verdriet na die oppervlak, totdat die seun wat van alles weghardloop uiteindelik moet omdraai om sy rou in die oë te kyk.

When a car accident kills his mother and his father retreats into a clinic, seventeen-year-old Gabriel Lombard is uprooted from the leafy mountain suburbs and is sent to live in a cramped Woodstock house with his aunt Lotta and grandmother Lenie. Determined not to crumble like his father, he buries his grief behind a cool front, wild lies and an overripe imagination, where a Kaapse Klopse brass band chases him through the streets. In therapy, he meets Sasha and falls for her. To get closer to her, he is strong-armed into the school poetry slam. But the nearer the competition comes, the harder his buried grief pushes to the surface, until the boy who runs from everything must finally turn and face it.
