ABOUT
Nadwa
A monthly gathering of stories, ideas and conversation in Johannesburg.
If you've been looking for a place for deeper conversation in Johannesburg, we'd love to welcome you.
Nadwa is a monthly gathering built around an interesting guest, one conversation and one room. We started it because some conversations are better had in person. Once a month, we invite someone whose work sparks a good conversation and so we can gather to listen, ask questions and learn something new together. There are no panels, presentations or networking sessions. You don’t have to be an academic or expert in a field. This is for anyone who is simply curious about the world. This evening is an invitation to slow down and spend time in conversation.
For our first gathering, we are joined by Dr Kgafela oa Magogodi, storyteller, director and lecturer at the Wits School of Arts.
Gathering One
On the Fire of Stories
Drawing on the Setswana tradition of Mollo wa Ditshomo ("the fire of stories"), Dr Kgafela will share stories and reflections on memory, storytelling and gathering.
The evening will begin with a storytelling session, followed by a conversation and audience Q&A exploring why stories and gathering have remained one of humanity's oldest ways of understanding ourselves, each other and the world around us.
What to expect
• Storytelling in an intimate setting
• A conversation with Dr Kgafela oa Magogodi
• Audience questions and discussion
• A chance to meet other curious people from across Johannesburg and build a new community
You are welcome to come on your own or with friends.
