Overview

“There are few cafés in the world as stunning as Truth, a steampunk inspired artisan coffee shop that is filled from top to bottom with metal piping and quirky old machinery. But people don’t just flock there for the décor…” So starts the rave review by The Telegraph, who named Truth Café the best coffee shop in the world in 2016. Of course, there’s far more to this destination than infinite Instagram opportunities. Truth’s hand-roasted coffees are supplied to some of the best restaurants and hotels across the country – and are the preferred poison of countless at-home coffee addicts’ morning cups.

Spreading the love – and knowledge – The Truth Coffee Academy offers folks the chance to broaden their knowledge on the subject and learn all the ins and outs needed to become baristas in their own right – whether they want to simply learn how to make the meanest flat whites at home or are thinking of making coffee a career. And that ain’t no lie.

Schedule Barista Introductory Course:

As the barista trainers at the coffee academy love saying, there’s no point in having a sports car in your garage if you don’t know how to drive it. Sure espresso machines look cool in your kitchen, but if you don’t know your handle from your basket filter, chances are likely that you’ll either end up making terrible coffee, or worse, put that mean machine into early retirement. Aimed at owners of espresso machines – or those who are seriously considering buying one – this introductory course focuses on all the stages of making killer espressos.

Beginning at the beginning, you’ll learn about different coffee beans and how different roasting methods affect their taste; then how to take apart your coffee grinder and experiment with ground sizes to get the taste you prefer. There’ll be a run-down of the different components of your machine, how to look after them and what can go wrong (quite a lot, actually). And then the extraction high-jinx starts. Basically, the way you ‘pull’ an espresso shot makes a huge difference to the end product. You don’t want a bitter, over-extracted shot, but you don’t want a weak one either. Playing around, you’ll learn how to find that sweet spot. Once you have the espresso part down, you’ll move onto milk stretching (a technical term for aerating milk with that steamer nozzle that makes those funny noises) a technique that’ll enable you to make your dinner-party guests everything from cortados and macchiatos to flat whites and lattes. Speaking of, you’ll learn the trick to pouring latte art like a pro. No big deal if yours ends up looking more like a duck than a swan. It’s all part of the fun.
