Nature Appreciation Walk
Sun Apr 26, 09:00 - Sun Apr 26, 11:00
Kloofendal Nature Reserve
ABOUT
Kloofendal is part of a critically endangered ecosystem, namely the Roodepoort Reef Mountain Bushveld, which consists of rocky quartzite ridges and shale valleys with its plants and animals uniquely adapted to this harsh environment, sandy soils low in nutrients on the ridges, more nutrients lower down on the shale soils. Plants and animals are specifically adapted to save water, to store water and nutrients for the periods of the year when water is scarce. Plants have this wonderful ability to produce sugars through their leaves (photosynthesis), the sugars and proteins of which they don’t really want to share with the animals that browse or graze on them, hence they develop mechanisms to make it hard for animals to eat them.
Come and join Karin on her walk where she will share her knowledge on how these plants and animals survive and create the beautiful environment that makes up this endangered ecosystem, also pointing out the threats to this ecosystem caused by the invasion of alien invasive plants, and how to combat this problem.
Meet at the Ecological Centre 15 minutes before the event. This event will go ahead regardless of the weather. For queries, please contact the Friends of Kloofendal (phone, WhatsApp) on 079 693-5608. For more information about Kloofendal Nature Reserve, please go to www.kloofendalfriends.org.za
