More on the Band:
Spearheaded by guitarist Jane Mayne and drummer Karen Rutter, the band has explored the muse with a range of creators through the years – these include vocalist Fancy Galada, violinists Tshepo Mngoma and Kate O’Hanlon, bassist Rob Stemmet, keyboardist Wolf Wunderlich, and marimba player Thandi Swartbooi.
Featuring an original playlist of instrumental and vocal tracks, the group’s fusion repertoire hooks around a jazz rock motif, peppered with joyful mbaqanga phrasings, and other nuances from the Southern African region.
At the heart of the Madame Afrique experience lies Jane Mayne’s signature six-string playing, a style coloured by valve-driven sustain, and propelled by an impulse to radiate a shared metaphysical experience.Behind the kit, longtime collaborator Karen Rutter is perfectly paired to expand on this experiential journey, with groove-driven bassist Marlene Laros sitting in the pocket in the backline.
From bossas to ballads, to Afro jive, funky grooves, and blazing fusion solos, Madame Freak projects a simple authenticity, facilitated by music’s ability to transcend time and space and unite all present in an expansive, aural heart space.
