Love and longing are the most common and cliché themes we see across vocal music. From Baroque to Pop, matters of the heart find their best and most angsty expression through songs. But aside from the gushing and glamour of falling in love, true love, and everlasting love, there is also love’s unwelcome – and sometimes unavoidable – shadow: Heartbreak.

This programme reveals the two sides of a love affair’s ending. Through pieces ranging from Saint-Saëns’ seductive Mon cœur to Mozart’s melodramatic Smanie implacabile, the full emotional spectrum of a broken heart is presented. Prepare to be smitten, stunned, and surprised by songs exploring those who break hearts, and those who are heartbroken.
