More on the Artist

Black Jack Davey set out for rock glory and yet, more and more, considers himself a part of the folk tradition. Perhaps it's the influence of his uncle, David Large, a formidable folk artist in his day, or the precious song writing and singing lessons he has received from Jenny Eaves (of Jenny & the Jameses) over the last two decades or perhaps it goes back right to the beginning: learning to sing Tom Dooley while dutifully strumming a baby acoustic at the age of 8.

After many years of playing and performing and dabbling in songwriting, 2023 ushered in an exciting new beginning. During two successive mornings in a Muizenberg studio with the legendary Jonny Blundell an 8 track debut album was laid down.

Stories in the Dark is simple in its presentation but the strength of the lyrical and musical underpinnings are undeniable. In a world of over-produced music this album cuts through the noise with sincerity and imperfection. Love, loneliness, despair, and the awkwardness of youth give the listener something human to hold on to and cherish. With an intricate fingerpicking folk guitar style, warm and powerful vocals, and endearing, lyrically driven ballads, Black Jack Davey is the underdiscovered gem you didn’t know you needed.

From shows in Cape Town at The Commons and Kaya Cafe, to shows in Knysna and Hogsback and as far afield as London, there is a growing number of insiders who know something you don’t: what it means to experience Black Jack Davey as he sings it to you live.
