Soul of the Village. Fire of the City. Nhoza is a Cape Town-based singer/songwriter whose music pulses with the spirit of her roots and the electricity of the urban stage.

She has been a performer for over 2 decades and calls her sound Traditional African Fusion – a potent blend of blues, soul, jazz, and the deeply resonant rhythms of African music. Whether performing solo, as a duo, or with her full band, Nhoza’s voice is unmistakable: rich, raw, and real.

More about Nhoza:

Nomawethu "Nhoza" Sitsholwana was born in a small village outside King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, where the sounds of church choirs, birdsong, and traditional harmonies shaped her early years. Now based in Cape Town, she carries the name unolali – "village girl" – with pride, infusing her music with a deep reverence for her heritage and a fearless modern edge.

At the age of 15, Nhoza was already singing in jazz clubs, learning the ropes from local legends like Titi Tira and keyboardist Yeye. Her first professional performance was at the iconic Manenberg Jazz Café – not bad for a high school student with big dreams. Since then, Nhoza has carved out a powerful presence in the Southern African music scene. Her voice has shared stages with celebrated blues and rock artists such as Richard Pryor, Riaan Smit, Dale Collins, Doc John, Sannie Fox,

Ann Jangle, and many more. She’s lent her soulful sound to recording sessions with bands like Freshlyground, Crimson House, and The Roots Grown Deep, and collaborated with the acclaimed Vuyan Dance Company on their production Sophiatown in Johannesburg.

For over a decade, Nhoza was the frontwoman of the Afro-rock powerhouse Black South Easter, performing across South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. At 31, she stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist — ready to take her own stories and sound to new heights.

Her live performances are where Nhoza truly shines — a vocal powerhouse backed by a tight band of brass, bass, drums, and keys, though she’s equally captivating in stripped-down solo or duo settings. Her range moves from delicate to thunderous, often within a single breath. Her sound — like the cry of a guineafowl across the veld or the promise of summer rain — is rooted, raw, and unforgettable.

Nhoza is not just a singer — she is a storyteller, a soul-stirrer, and a true original.
