ABOUT

Bartók’s The Wonderful Mandarin: Listening Spaces Vol. V

In 1918 Budapest, Bartók wrote a ballet so violent it was banned after one performance. A prostitute, forced by thugs to lure victims. Three men robbed. Then the Mandarin arrives - and refuses to die, no matter what they do to him.

No romantic orchestral sweep. No comfortable distance. Just 20 minutes of Bartók staring directly at economic desperation, sexual exploitation, and what people become when survival is the only logic that matters.

The music is extraordinary - primal rhythms, grinding dissonances, an obsessive energy that won’t let go. Bartók uses the orchestra like a weapon, stripping away any pretence that poverty is picturesque or suffering is noble.

We’ll listen together at Bridge Books in Marshalltown. Guided listening first, so you hear how Bartók builds tension, creates menace, makes the Mandarin’s supernatural persistence feel inevitable. Then we talk about what we heard - and why this 1918 story about urban survival feels uncomfortably relevant in 2026 Johannesburg.

This isn’t background music. It demands something from you. That’s the point.

What to expect:

· 20 minutes of Bartók’s orchestral suite (the concert version of the ballet)

· Guided listening notes on what to listen for

· Group discussion afterwards about the music and what it’s actually saying

· Maximum 20 people so everyone can contribute

· Bridge Books provides the space, we provide the music and conversation

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible via main entrance. Bridge Books has level access throughout.

What is Listening Spaces?

We sit with one piece of classical music for an afternoon. No phones, no distractions - just focused listening, then honest conversation about what we heard. Previous volumes have explored Mussorgsky, Beethoven, Schubert, and Stravinsky. Each event stands alone.

House of Shem creates cultural experiences that reconnect to their actual purpose. This isn’t about feeling sophisticated or ticking a culture box. It’s about discovering what happens when you actually pay attention to something extraordinary
