Day 1.
- Presentation on Plant taxonomy applied to Alien Invasive Plants (AIPs) occurring on the Witwatersrand.
- What is the problem with AIPs
- How to use the AIP Field Guide in identification of local AIPs
- Introduction to tools used in removing AIPs
- The importance of documenting work done.
- Recording AIPs removed using the GPS Essentials App
- Practical in the field – identifying AIPs, distinguishing them from non-invasive similar looking indigenous plant species and use tools in eradication of AIPs .
Day 2.
- Revision
- Practical in the field – continued.
Day 3.
- Listing and analysis of data recorded over the previous two days.
- Tour by car to nearby sites, identifying AIP infestations along roads and in public open spaces.
- Discussion on control methodologies.
Requirements of the students
To fill in our standard indemnity form.
Please wear clothing that does not attract burs and seeds – i.e. no stretchy material
Walking shoes, hat, suncream are recommended.
Something to drink and a snack carried in a small backpack.
Smart cell phone with Android operating system, fully charged with the free App GPS Essentials downloaded onto it, and data on the phone. The GPS Essential App is not available on Apple phones.
The course includes a copy of “Invasive alien and problem plants on the Witwatersrand & Magaliesberg – Field Guide”. This book will be used throughout the course.
