HOME IN TIME FOR LUNCH
A Coming-(Out)-Of-Age Story, with Apologies to Stephen Sondheim.
From the mielie fields of a conservative South African farming town to the bright
lights of musical self-discovery, HOME IN TIME FOR LUNCH is a funny, tender, and
musically rich one-man show that charts one young man’s journey toward identity,
pride, and being on time for lunch.
Armed only with a pocket watch, a prayer or two, and a secret obsession with
Broadway cast albums, our unnamed hero must navigate a world of church bazaars,
stoic dads, matchmaking Tannies, and the crushing weight of silence. Along the
way, he plays every character he encounters with sharp wit and aching honesty,
from his God-fearing mother to his emotionally elusive father, using only a chair, a
hat, and his imagination.
This fast-paced and moving solo show is structured around some of Stephen
Sondheim’s most iconic songs, including Giants in the Sky, The Ladies Who Lunch,
Send in the Clowns, Not While I’m Around, and Being Alive. With musical interludes
that elevate the narrative and monologues that blend poignant introspection with
laugh-out-loud hilarity, the show captures the heartbeat of small-town life, the
ticking of time, and the moments that make us who we are.
A story of secrets, songs, and self-acceptance, Home in Time for Lunch is ultimately a
joyful celebration of growing up, coming out, and finally stepping into the spotlight.
Beyond the theatre, David Plank is a talented musician with the Pietermaritzburg City
Orchestra, where he continues to explore the power of live performance in all its forms.
A lifelong lover of Star Wars, Dave is no stranger to epic stories — whether they unfold
in a galaxy far, far away or under the spotlight on stage.
“The performance was built around the music of Stephen Sondheim, using songs like “Send in the Clowns”, “Being Alive”, and “Giants in the Sky” to show the character’s emotions and struggles.”

Where love is brewed fresh daily and the music never misses a beat… Step into the warm, whimsical world of this musical tribute steeped in nostalgia, charm, and the unforgettable melodies of Burt Bacharach.
Set in a cosy little coffee shop where time slows down and feelings run high, this enchanting show follows two strangers who discover that love, like coffee, can be unexpected, bittersweet, and best enjoyed slowly. As they navigate awkward first glances, heartfelt moments, and near-misses, the songs of Burt Bacharach become the true narrator of their unfolding story.
From toe-tapping hits like “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” to heart-melting ballads like “The Look of Love,” “Walk On By,” and “I Say a Little Prayer,” every number is a chapter in their quirky, caffeine-fueled connection.
Expect glorious harmonies, vintage vibes, and more musical magic than you can stir into a flat white. Whether you’re in love, out of love, or just here for the soundtrack, BACK AT BURT’S is a feel-good celebration of music, memory, and the gentle mayhem of falling for someone across a crowded café.
Bring a date, bring your mom, bring your bestie; we’ll supply the tunes, the coffee, and all the magic moments in between.
