ABOUT

Every year, just before the New Year sun sets on Kenton-on Sea, something truly spectacular happens along the banks of the Kariega River. Locals, holidaymakers, boat enthusiasts, and curious onlookers gather for a uniquely South African spectacle: The Kenton Seagull Regatta.

Set against the natural beauty of the Kariega River, Eastern Cape, The Kenton Seagull Regatta is more than just a race - it's a beloved community tradition, a charitable fundraiser, and a day of laughter, music, and revelry.

The event revolves around the legendary British Seagull outboard motor - an iconic, noisy, and somewhat unpredictable piece of engineering that powered fishing boats and dinghies from the 1930s through to the 1990s. Today, these engines live on the most joyous way possible: powering a colourful flotilla of homemade boats down the Kariega River in a madcap regatta unlike any other.

The regatta brings together over 200 boats, each with a Seagull engine, two or more daring, outrageously dressed crew members. Participants compete not just for speed, but for creativity and style - with prizes awarded for best dressed teams, most original boats, and even the most impressive breakdowns.

Lucky draw prize: Jamieson boats, Bandit 380 fitted with 15hp Suzuki 4 stroke. (Actual Boat)

THE RULES ARE SIMPLE:

Seagull outboard engines, in original condition. (Not modified)

Models include the 40 series or 102 series. Ie no later models that were around 7.5hp.

Minimum of 2 people per boat

Boats should adhere to the SAMSA regulations

Boats should have a natural transom. (Not modified or added)

No canoes, yachts, catamarans or paddle boards.

PLEASE NOTE:

- Boat entrants, skippers, crew or spectators take part at their own risk and do not hold the organisers, Family of organiser's or any helpers liable for any damage, injury or losses associated with the regatta.

Its a race that honours the spirit of ingenuity, good humour and a bit of chaos. But the Seagull Regatta isn’t just for those on the water. Onshore, the event offers a full day of entertainment. Spectators line the riverbanks with picnics, deck chairs, and cameras, enjoying the music, food and drink stalls, and a truly festive summer atmosphere. From early morning to late afternoon, Kenton buzzes with excitement as the regatta becomes a centrepiece of the coastal holiday season.

What truly sets the event apart, is its mission. The Kenton Seagull Regatta is proudly a non-profit, community-driven fundraiser. Organised by the friends of the Seagull Regatta and supported by local and national sponsors. The event raises vital funds for local schools, old age homes, charities, sports clubs and community upliftment projects in the greater Kenton-on Sea area.
