ABOUT
Poetry • Music • Memory • Power
On 19 October 1977, the apartheid government banned Black Consciousness organisations like SASO and the Black People’s Convention. Newspapers were shut down. Journalists, activists and intellectuals were detained without trial. Just one year after the 1976 Soweto Uprising and one month after Steve Biko’s death – bekunyiwa bafwethu. Kabomedi gathers to remember, to speak, to heal and to celebrate the power of Black voice.
We begin with a Kabomedi Seminar Series talk by Thabo Lehlongwa (“the common man”) titled “Remembering Black Wednesday.” The night continues with live music and poetry in true Kabomedi spirit – sound, truth, resistance, community.
Featuring:
• Malcom Jiyane Xorile Jiyane Trio
• Pieter Madibuseng Odendaal (poetry + piano)
• Black Circle (house band)
As always, Kabomedi is rooted in community care. Please support the House of Siza Community Library by bringing a book to donate. every book helps us build a space of knowledge, memory and healing.
