Edge of Africa Challenge hosted by the IPA Blaauwberg

Fri Jul 31, 06:30 - Sat Aug 1, 18:00

Strandfontein

ABOUT

The Edge of Africa Challenge is a premier 2-day endurance walk experience set along the breathtaking West Coast of South Africa, in Strandfontein. Hosted by the International Police Association (IPA) Blaauwberg Branch in partnership with Miles for Smiles, this inaugural event challenges participants to complete approximately 60km over two days across some of the country’s most raw and beautiful coastal terrain.

But this is more than just a physical challenge — it’s a purpose-driven journey. Every step taken contributes to changing lives, as the event raises funds for children born with cleft lips and palates.

Through Miles for Smiles and Operation Smile, every R5,500 raised helps fund life-changing surgery for a child, giving them confidence, dignity, and a brighter future.

Whether you are a seasoned endurance walker or someone ready to take on a life-changing challenge, this event welcomes you.

  • Endurance athletes looking for a new and meaningful challenge
  • Adventure seekers who want to experience the wild West Coast landscape
  • Individuals who value camaraderie, resilience, and shared achievement
  • Members of law enforcement, armed forces, and the public who align with the spirit of unity and service
  • Anyone who wants to make a real difference in a person’s life while pushing their personal limits

Because this is not just a walk — it’s a movement.

The Edge of Africa Challenge combines:

  • Purpose – Directly impacting children’s lives through meaningful fundraising
  • Challenge – Testing your physical and mental endurance over two demanding days
  • Connection – Building lifelong friendships through shared struggle and achievement
  • Inspiration – Walking alongside individuals driven by courage, service, and heart

Set against the dramatic coastline of Namaqualand, participants will experience nature in its purest form while being part of something far bigger than themselves.

This event is built on the powerful IPA motto: “Servo per Amikeco” — Service Through Friendship, bringing people together across backgrounds in a shared mission of hope and resilience.

Participants can expect a truly rewarding and unforgettable experience:

  • A world-class endurance challenge (±60km over 2 days)
  • Unmatched scenery along the West Coast and Namaqualand coastline
  • Strong camaraderie and team spirit built through shared effort
  • A sense of achievement that goes beyond finishing — knowing you made a difference
  • Purpose-driven participation contributing to life-changing surgeries for children
  • Certificates and medals recognizing your accomplishment
  • Networking opportunities with participants from diverse backgrounds, including law enforcement and community leaders
  • Personal growth, mentally, physically, and emotionally

Most importantly, participants walk away knowing that their effort has real impact, changing the life and smile of one child at a time.

During this time, the rugged coastal landscapes of Strandfontein, Papendorp, and Doringbaai are transformed into a breathtaking tapestry of colour. Vast stretches of wildflowers burst into bloom, creating a once-in-a-year spectacle where vibrant daisies, succulents, and indigenous flora meet the dramatic Atlantic coastline.

Participants won’t just walk a route — they will journey through:

  • Carpets of wildflowers in full bloom
  • Ocean views contrasting with colourful landscapes
  • Unique biodiversity found only in this region
  • Unforgettable photo opportunities at every turn

This natural phenomenon is globally celebrated and draws visitors from around the world — making your experience not only physically rewarding, but visually unforgettable.

Why this makes the event even more special

Walking during flower season means:

  • You experience Namaqualand at its absolute peak beauty
  • Every kilometer becomes a scenic, uplifting experience
  • The environment enhances motivation, energy, and inspiration
  • It transforms the challenge into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure

MILES FOR SMILES

Miles for Smiles

Miles for Smiles creates awareness and raises funds for Operation Smile* who facilitate corrective surgery on children born with cleft lip and palates. For these children, a relatively quick, simple operation results in a life-changing smile. We strive to ensure that every child with a cleft lip or palate has access to this level of surgical care.

*Operation Smile is a non-profit organisation that provides free corrective cleft lip or cleft palate surgeries to (mostly) children in need across the world.

Approximately one in every 1000 babies in African is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. One in 10 children born with a cleft will die before their first birthday. Those that survive struggle with speech difficulties, are often malnourished and are frequently ostracised because of their appearance.

Corrective surgery for a cleft lip or palate can change someone’s life

Children born with a cleft lip or palate risk dying of malnutrition unless they get corrective surgery.

ROUTE MAP

Edge of Africa Challenge Strandfontein, West Coast, Western Cape

DAY 1 : STRANDFONTEIN ? PAPENDORP ? OLIFANTS RIVER ? STRANDFONTEIN

±35 km | Coastal, River, Wetlands, Flowers, Cliffs

Day 1 launches from the old heart of Strandfontein, where the sunrise spills over the Atlantic and the village slowly wakes. The route heads out along gravel roads and old sheep paths, carrying you through rolling dunes, fynbos, and wideopen West Coast skies on the way to the quiet, magical village of Papendorp.

Walking through Papendorp feels like stepping into a forgotten world, sandy lanes, river air, and a stillness shaped by generations of fishing families. At the labyrinth turn, the route bends right through a farm gate and onto private farmland, a rare privilege reserved for this event. For nearly 6 km, you cross land few ever see, surrounded by bursts of wildflowers during the spring season.

From here, the terrain shifts as you drop toward the Olifants River. This is where all settles in and the challenge becomes real. The route pushes through mudbanks, sandbanks, and the floodplain salt marshes, with reeds scattered along the riverbanks and birdlife erupting from hidden channels. The river widens into a shimmering, hazed expanse as you move toward the dramatic Olifants River mouth, where river and ocean collide.

The return to Strandfontein depends on the weather and tides:

• battle the infamous swaar sand, a demanding stretch of soft beach, or

• climb onto the rugged cliff path with sweeping Atlantic views

Both routes deliver their own kind of magic.

The final push takes you past the NSRI station and up the last hill into Strandfontein, finishing Day 1 at the Perdeskoen Campsite — tired, tested, and triumphant.

DAY 2 – STRANDFONTEIN ? SISHEN TRAIN GRAVEL ROAD ? DORINGBAAI ? RETURN VIA THE CLIFFS

±26 km | Gravel Roads, Beaches, Coves, Cliffs

Day 2 begins once again in Strandfontein, with participants heading out along the gravel road that runs beside the Sishen railway line. This long, open stretch captures the raw beauty of the West Coast — wide skies, rugged terrain, and the rhythmic presence of the railway.

The gravel road leads all the way toward Doringbaai, where the route drops onto the beach. The ocean becomes your companion as you walk northward toward the harbour, passing the iconic Fryer’s Cove area.

After reaching Doringbaai, the route turns back toward Strandfontein, but this time along the dramatic cliff paths that define the coastline. This section is unforgettable:

  • towering cliffs
  • hidden coves
  • crashing waves
  • panoramic ocean views

You will also witness the old mining scars carved into the coastline, a stark reminder of the region’s history and the importance of protecting this fragile environment.

The final kilometres follow the cliff path back into Strandfontein, where Day 2 ends at the Perdeskoen Campsite, completing the full Edge of Africa experience.
