ABOUT
Friends of Kloofendal in association with the West Rand Astronomy Club will be hosting their annual ‘Star gazing in the Kloof’ at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on 30th August 2025 from 5pm to 8pm, a family event for young and old!
What to expect on the night of 30th August
Entrance to the event will open at 16:45. Upon arrival, you will receive red cellophane and an elastic band to cover your torch or cell phone This helps minimise the impact of bright lights on your night vision. Please meet at the “Sun” jungle gym for the Planet Walk at 17:00. Ask at the entrance for directions. Depending on the number of people there may be 2 walks. At 18:00 there will be a presentation by one of the WRAC members in the Eco Centre.
Following the presentation, there will be telescopes setup in the amphitheatre. This will be a fantastic opportunity to experience the night sky in a unique way. Amateur astronomers and enthusiasts will be on hand to guide you through a journey of the beautiful night sky, pointing out various celestial objects and answering any questions you may have.
Please follow the instructions of the person at each telescope as this is very sensitive equipment.
Please bring the following:
Your ticket
A torch or phone
Layers of warm clothing as it gets really cold.
Funds raised go towards conservation and community projects at Kloofendal Nature Reserve, and the development of astronomy on the Westrand. Please note that this event is limited to 250 participants. Please note that this very popular event is restricted to 250 participants. Please remember to book early to secure your place. This event will go ahead regardless of the weather.

The West Rand Astronomy Club
The West Rand Astronomy club was founded by a group led by Kenny Nevill and Gerhard Koekemoer in 2008 who realised the need for a platform on the West Rand for enthusiasts to get together and share their knowledge and experience. The focus being on outreach, accommodating all levels of knowledge of the night sky.
The Club has a Facebook page (West Rand Astronomy Club) and hosts WhatsApp groups on various astronomy related topics. In addition the club has meetings once a month, either virtual or in person as well as star parties. All are welcome, young and old, from novice to professional. No telescope needed.

Friends of Kloofendal Nature Reserve
Friends of Kloofendal is a non-profit organisation, founded in August 2002. The organisation focuses upon environment and community projects and activities within Kloofendal Nature Reserve. FrOK consists of dedicated guides and volunteers who use their wide variety of knowledge to promote conservation through guided walks, educational events and school programmes. Projects include alien invasive plant eradication, bird hide maintenance and historical gold mine maintenance.
