The gifted string players from the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra bring you a uniquely African string quartet concert. Included in the programme are a few snapshots of works by the Nigerian composer Godwin Sadoh. Sensitively set folk melodies beautifully arranged for this intimate combination. This programme is otherwise entirely home-brewed South African. The quartet are joined by festival founder and director Tony Alcock on the double bass in Karla van Niekerk’s Quintet and violinist Loren Ehlers showcases his talent on the accordion and as a composer in a performance of his own music. Memories of the Soweto String Quartet in “Zebra Crossing” and arrangements by violinist Samson Diamond of “ThulaThula” and ‘iBuyile iAfrika” highlight Kwela music transformed by the string quartet. Mokale Koapeng’s Komeng is also on the menu, all while you sip wine and enjoy a tantalising cheeseboard in The Old Barn at Gay’s Guernsey Dairy. Don’t miss it!
