Ever wondered why birds flutter and swoop into music so often?
Throughout human history, birds have captivated our imagination and enriched our artistic expression. From Shakespeare to The Beatles, artists have been fascinated by our feathered friends - and with good reason. Birds remind us of life's simple joys - whether it's a sparrow's morning chatter or the synchronized flight of starlings painting patterns across the sky. They represent the uplifting of the human spirit, like the dove carrying hope across troubled waters and the phoenix rising from ashes. They're the original social networkers, mastering the art of harmony long before humans thought to sing in groups.
The Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers is an a capella ensemble consisting of 12 members performing a variety of musical styles. As we soar through this afternoon's program - both bird-inspired and beyond - we celebrate these natural maestros and invite you to join us in reflecting on how music, like birdsong, has the power to transcend boundaries, lift spirits, and bring people together in moments of shared beauty.
We'll be covering a wide range of genres and styles, including works from The Beatles, Sinead O'Connor, Mia Makaroff, Xander Kritzinger, Thomas Morley, John Bartlett, a traditional Irish song (in Gaelic!), and many, many more. There's sure to be something for everyone to enjoy!
