Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers
About
The Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers (SMS) is an a capella ensemble that originated in the Stellenbosch University’s Music Department of 2003. Since then, they have varied from 6 to 13 members from different backgrounds who meet weekly to make music together as friends - true to the spirit of what a madrigal is.
A madrigal can be seen as the "pop" music of the Middle Ages and served as a form of social entertainment and an escape from the strict rules of the church of that time. Apart from madrigals, the Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers also tackle a wide variety of other genres – from spiritual to secular – and in their performances they take care to cover them all, with interesting tidbits in-between.
SMS regularly performs at church services, weddings, and social functions and are in great demand in the Western Cape due to the pleasant atmosphere they add to theses occasions.
