Join Queer Revolution for a Flyer Brigade to raise awareness for the Zackie 2024 campaign. He is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections. We'll meet at the Green Point Lighthouse, at 2pm, and distribute flyers to promote Zackie Achmat's Campaign. If possible, try to wear purple.

Zackie Achmat has been an activist and leader for over 47 years, and is running as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections. His commitment to justice, equality, and freedom has shaped his remarkable journey as an activist. From his early involvement in student protests against Apartheid to his groundbreaking work in HIV/AIDS advocacy, LGBTQ+ rights, education, and housing, Zackie has consistently fought for the rights and dignity of marginalised communities.

This is why Queer Revolution is supporting the Zackie 2024 campaign:

In 1993, Zackie Achmat and a group of fearless activists formed ABIGALE, the first non-racial working-class queer organisation in Cape Town's townships. They laid the groundwork for equal rights based on sexual orientation. Zackie's journey to justice began here.

Zackie Achmat's legacy in LGBTQ+ rights includes his pivotal role in founding the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality (NCGLE). Their efforts led to the inclusion of a sexual orientation clause in the Constitution, prohibiting unfair discrimination.

The NCGLE, led by Zackie Achmat, achieved historic LGBTQ+ milestones between 1994 and 1999:

• Medical aid benefits for same-sex partners
• Decriminalisation of sodomy in 1998
• Immigration rights for same-sex couples through the Courts
• Employment rights and pension benefits for LGBTQ+ people
• Inclusion of sexual orientation in the Refugee Act
• Rights for lesbians to bear children and LGBTQ+ people to adopt children
