ABOUT
Handel’s Messiah 2024
The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town, in collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, brings Handel’s Messiah to life, a masterpiece that has influenced sacred and classical music since its debut in 1742. Its blend of intricate melodies and vocal prowess bridges the gap between divine worship and artistic expression, making it a pivotal work of profound significance.
Composed 282 years ago, this timeless piece remains one of the most celebrated oratorios globally, cherished for its ability to convey deep spiritual themes. Since 1967, with only a pause due to Covid, the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town has made Handel’s Messiah an Easter tradition, highlighting its enduring appeal.
Especially renowned for its stirring "Hallelujah" chorus, the oratorio weaves the narrative of Jesus Christ’s life, from prophecy to resurrection, with majestic Baroque music. Regardless of your beliefs, the blend of powerful orchestration and vocal harmony offers a captivating experience. Easter weekend presents the ideal moment to immerse yourself in the splendor of Handel’s Messiah.
This year we are joined by 29 singers from the Happy Birthday Händel Förderverein, all the way from Halle (Saale), Germany.
