ABOUT

You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” – Michael Phelps

Join us, alongside author and ultrarunner Erica Terblanche, motivational speaker and high altitude mountaineer Remy Kloos and filmmakers Caroline Broukaert and Kirsten Gerber, as we showcase a collection of films that present our collective determination to do great things when faced with adversity; to push beyond our limits when the body says no; to put one foot in front of the other when all you want to do is quit! This is a celebration of the characters that show us it can be done, and how just by participating means to belong.

Films:

Near The River | South African Premiere

In the tourism town of Livingston, Zambia, a group of local men who make their living portering kayaks aspire to become safety kayakers on the Zambezi River. The proposed Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Scheme threatens to flood the famous rapids of the Zambezi, and eliminate river related jobs.

Her Way

"Her Way" illustrates how we all have the ability to be and achieve more if assumptions and stereotypes are ignored. The film tells the stories of three women who have chosen to ignore stereotypes as they chart unique life paths—a single mother and member of the first all-female firefighting team in South Africa; a Chinese-born structural engineer and trail runner in New Zealand; and a delivery nurse and mother of four with a love for America’s National Parks.

Don't Look Back

The Rhino Run is a 2750km self-supported bikepacking race. It starts in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, and finishes in Windhoek, Namibia. There are no aid stations, route markings, backup vehicles, or support. Riders must complete the route via GPS tracking and may only get aid at the various shops and towns along the route. The route traverses through some of the harshest landscapes in South Africa like the Cederberg and the Tankwa Karoo, once the riders hit Namibia they will traverse through the Namib Desert and along the D707 which is dubbed "Namibia's Dream Road".“Don’t Look Back” follows the story of some of the riders from the inaugural Rhino Run. It is a story of grit, perseverance, and the resolve to never give up. The 2022 edition featured one of the most celebrated fields ever at an ultra-distance event of this nature. Would the newcomers have what it takes to challenge the established veterans?

The Long River Home | South African Premiere

The Long River Home is a film about overcoming the residual impacts of war through kayaking with a team. Aaron Howell and Russell Davies are combat veterans who were injured in war and now come together for another mission as they guide blind Navy veteran, Lonnie Bedwell, on his third trip through the Grand Canyon. Over a 14 day river trip they battle more than 80 powerful rapids, screaming directions to Lonnie the whole way. Always looming downstream roars Lava Falls, the largest rapid of them all. Throughout the journey they remember their past experiences and learn that negotiating the rapids of life is as simple as forming a team, kicking out in the current, and finding a line through the chaos.

Gijima

What are we talking about when we talk about running? For Sinovuyo Ngcobo, like many of us, it is both simple and complicated. Growing up in rural KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Sinovuyo has faced tremendous hardship and adversity but running has always been there for him. Initially, it was an escape but over time, running taught him lessons in perseverance, determination and self-belief. “Gijima” (From Zulu. Meaning: To Run) is an honest story, of a young boy from rural South Africa, who always had one dream… To run. It is an inspiring account of hope and courage, against all odds.

And Yet I Remain

Caleb lost his leg to a great white shark and returned to the ocean a few weeks later. His life became a headlong rush to succeed and achieve, fueled by a burning, innate passion. This short film follows him as he slows down to process his trauma, while learning to free dive, an immersive place in the brine where you start to see things differently. Caleb is still coming to terms with his new body, a body forever changed.
