Tsekmate vertel die storie van ses gevangenes wat deur middel van ’n skaakspel probeer sin maak van die gebeure wat hulle uiteindelik hulle vryheid gekos het. Word hulle verwerp weens omstandighede of verkeerde keuses, of moet hulle aanvaar word vir wie en wat hulle was voor hulle misdade? Watter rol speel die omgewing in die soort mense wat hulle geword het? Die karakters en gehoor worstel met dié vrae – dalk wag uitkoms tussen die selmure. 

Tsekmate tells the story of six prisoners who, through a game of chess, try to make sense of the events that ultimately cost them their freedom. Are they being rejected because of circumstances or wrong choices, or should they be accepted for who and what they were before their crimes? What role did the environment play in the kind of people they became? The characters and audience wrestle with these questions – perhaps a solution awaits between the cell walls.
