The Kindness Quest: Last Stretch To Freedom

It is my last stretch to freedom! Oops, I mean my Master’s degree! ??

I am currently (still) busy with my Master’s in Clinical Social Work, which consists of coursework, dissertation and a chunk of an internship at a psychiatric unit.

The master’s in Clinical Social Work specialisation aims to provide social workers with specialised psychiatric and psychotherapeutic knowledge and skills in the delivery of psychiatric and psychodynamic assessment, psychodynamic formulation, diagnosis and psychotherapy intervention to individuals, couples, families and groups. This specialisation also equips clinical social workers to apply their specialist knowledge and skills in preventative, developmental and supportive services in communities and society.

At the moment I am at the end of my proposal, heading to the various committees for their clearance before data collection begins. My study will aim to identify the psychosocial gender affirming needs of the gender diverse adolescent in the Cape Town area. These needs will include the different spheres of their lives: their personal needs, needs within their families, needs within their schools, and needs within their communities.

I am hoping that with this information I can then create tools to speak to these needs with a PhD… But first things first!

My goal is to take on my studies as a fulltime student for the last 6 months of this year, since trying to keep all the balls in the air while working a few jobs etc. is just not getting me that little bit further.

I also then aim to do my approximately 3-month internship in this time. During this time, I will be placed at a psychiatric facility of the university’s choosing. It is unpaid and fulltime placement, which means that general expenses will still have to be covered without having an income, and there I need some help especially from external sources.

Previous years’ attempts at fundraising helped me SO much to get this far, and for that I am forever grateful. If you are at all in a position to support my last stretch aiming at this, please know that it means the world to me, and that I aim to use every skill I learn in this degree to help and uplift my community wherever I am needed. Every bit helps, so please do not think it doesn’t matter! Al the “it won’t make a difference” adds up to a MASSIVE difference!

I am aiming to raise R50 000 with this fundraiser to pay the last tuition fees and get my dissertation done before heading off to the internship, which some new event will occur to speak to those needs.
