Festival Trailer:

ONCE A PUNK… (DIMA PUNK…)

This enlightening documentary follows a young Punk in Casablanca as he struggles to be himself in a society that looks down on his lifestyle.

Once a punk... always a punk? Stof is a young punk from Casablanca. During the eight years that we followed him, he tried to set his Mohawk against all odds. He pays a heavy price for his independence when he finds himself arrested and imprisoned for eleven months. Will he remain “Dima Punk”, forever a punk?

Years of immersion have won Stof’s and Orland’s confidence. Stof is a punker and Orland was his mentor, ten years ago. To film in their neighbourhood, the camera gradually became habitual and therefore, invisible. The film is a portrait, but, at the same time, a rare narrative on the situation of popular Urban youths in Morocco with different tastes, who are left out of the system and left to themselves, their lifestyle frowned upon. “NEET” is the acronym given to the 2.7 million young people from age 15 to 29 in this case in Morocco - it stands for No Education, No Employment, No Training. Stof is one of them and he struggles to try and be himself and at the same time to fit in the margins of the system.

Directed by Dominique Caubet

(France / Morocco)

THE WHISPER OF THE MARIMBA

The marimba is the bridge between Africa and Latin America.

This documentary looks across three generations of players at how the sound of the wooden xylophone connects the present-day life on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast with its African roots. Hundreds of years ago, the marimba music came to Ecuador across the sea. Stormy drum rhythms and the gentle, undulating melodies remind us of the violence experienced during slave trade and colonial rule and also tell the story of the centuries-old musical resistance of the Afro-Ecuadorian community. In 2015 the marimba music has been declared as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

"The Whisper of the Marimba" portrays three generations of musicians who lay bare their worries and dreams as well as their unshakable trust in the power of art and music to nurture their identity and community.

A story of losing memory and rewriting history...

Directed by Greta-Marie Becker

(Germany / Ecuador)

THE MAESTRO - A Symphony of Terror

This classical music-driven feature film is a loving tribute to the cult classics of the past, but also an exploration into deep philosophical issues about the nature of art, all against a horror backdrop of a failed composer losing his mind trying to bring his magnum opus to life.

It is the tale of a genius provoked and pushed into madness and beyond, The Maestro tells the story of Arun, a composer and conductor who tried to make it in Europe but has ended up teaching high society children in Thailand. For years, he has been composing a magnum opus, The Tongues of Angels, and dreams of premiering it under his own baton. The Covid crisis allows him to create an imagined utopia for gifted young musicians in the middle of nowhere, far from the pestilence and corruption of the outside world ... but things go horribly wrong. It is a work of transcendence, of wildness … and a touch of madness.

Directed by Paul Spurrier

(Thailand)

REZ METAL

An inspiring documentary following an unknown Metal band from a Navajo reservation who lands the opportunity to record in Denmark with renowned Metallica produced Flemming Rasmussen.

When Kyle Felter, the lead singer of I Don't Konform sent out a demo album to Flemming Rasmussen, the Grammy Award-winner producer of Metallica, they never imagined themselves a few months later rehearsing with Rasmussen inside a hot hogan on a Navajo reservation before recording their debut album at the iconic Sweet Silence Studio in Denmark. While following I Don't Konform's fairy tale journey, our documentary REZ METAL, tells the larger compelling story of the heavy metal scene on Navajo reservations where many youths have grown disaffected as a result of endemic poverty and high rate of suicides.

Directed by Ashkan Soltani Stone

(USA / Denmark)

1247

A look at the beautiful musical relationship between traditional gayageum player Bora Ju, and harpist Kihwa Lee.

The two artists, who met nine years ago in the complex cultural space ‘Banjul’, had a longing for each other, but they also had prejudices, so there was no chance to be together. Bora Ju, a gayageum player, has been active as a singer-songwriter as well as traditional music such as sanjo. In addition to performing with various musical instruments, she has continued on various stages by collaborating with dance, meditation, painting, and photography. Harpist Kihwa Lee, who has run ‘Banjul’ with her mother, collaborated with famous and unknown artists both at home and abroad, and it was a very natural thing to live. As the concert stage was reduced due to Corona 19, Kihwa Lee invited the performers to her house and started a YouTube called 'ZIPSUNI Live' and reunited with Bora Ju after 9 years. The two women form a duo called ‘1247’ and getting closer to each other as they learn the differences between each other's instruments. And they successfully complete their first offline performance at ‘Ghetto Live’, a hip concert hall in Seongsu-dong. Inspired by the enthusiastic response from the audience, '1247' plans to hold a second performance at the place where they first met, 'Banjul', and goes on a performance practice trip to Gangwon-do. Their music, who undergoes emptiness through learning and interprets this as artistic giving, takes root across the stage, the sea, the street and the living room.

Directed by Woojin Song

- THE SILENT STAGE

A look at how the pandemic impacted musicians The music scene, which is always the first to shut down during earthquakes, mining disasters, terrorist attacks at home and abroad, came to a halt with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though perceived as only “entertainment”, music is an indispensable element of art and one of the essential things that bring people together. The music industry, which can be gathered under headings such as musicians, production companies, managing companies and concert venues, employs millions of people from waiters to security personnel, helpers to sound operators, backstage managers to the technical team, cooks to cleaners, secretaries to assistants in companies. The shutdown process that started before the pandemic entered an even more serious phase. During this time, many musicians have had to get by selling their instruments, some committing suicide. The musicians, who could not even pay their rent, had to leave the house they lived in, move to other cities, or return to their families abandoning their established way of life. The stories of the musicians, who could not receive short-time work allowance or unemployment pay, and other workers in the music industry are now featured in the documentary, The Silent Stage.

Directed by Ugur Evin

(Turkey)

- CALL ME BACK: The Uncommon Wisdom of Yvette Slosch

A fictional comedy on how a jazz musician can survive lockdown Infamous New York City talent agent, Yvette Slosch (Linda Lavin), is determined to make a star out of her newest client, jazz violinist, Aaron Weinstein (himself). She refuses to let Aaron's lack of name recognition, jazz's dwindling fan base, or the 2020 global pandemic get in her way. As the pandemic rages, Yvette's schemes to keep Aaron's career afloat become increasingly convoluted, testing her abilities as an agent and her friendship with Aaron.

Directed by Aaron Weinstein

(USA)

- MUSIC AND MENTAL HEALTH

A music and psychology exploration. Besides being a musical hotspot, Austin Texas is a city that recognizes mental health as an important issue and one that can be combated by spreading awareness.

There has been a lot of talk about the effects of COVID-19 on people, including music artists and local business owners, and this film project happened to kick off as it gripped the world. The aim is to stomp out the stigma surrounding mental illness and making mental health a household concept that is no longer frowned upon. In this documentary independent artists share their talents and voices in more than one way, facilitating healing by sharing different aspects of their lives, through storytelling, which we hope will be appreciated by the community and their beloved fans.

Filmmaker Tina Rix is a Nigerian American psychotherapist and a woman of the common everyday people and advocates for the marginalized, tormented, oppressed, and forgotten people. She is comfortable rolling up her sleeves and jumping right into any environment and learning from the cultures surrounding her. She believes in integrating the arts, mental health, systemic thinking, and social justice into all aspects of life.

Directed by Tina Rix
