When the South African economy lies in the shadow of recessionary market pressures, it is not just up to the government to step up and do its part in boosting the economy but to all able minded South Africans to play their part in encouraging a proudly South African approach to business. Although many people take comedy and comedians as a joke, the reality is comedy is a very integral part of the South African entertainment industry and thus must be viewed and treated as a viable business sector that must also conform to trends of economic uplift for the country.
It is for this very reason that radio and TV personality Phat Joe and International Emmy nominated and 3 time SAFTA Award winning comedian Mum-z have teamed up with the Rockwell Theatre to create a “100% South African comedy dining experience“ in Cape Town. Although there are dedicated comedy venues in South Africa such as Joe Parker’s Parker’s Comedy and Jive (JHB), Kurt Schoonraad’s Cape Town Comedy Club and The Goliath Family’s Café Roast (JHB), all those venues have elements that make them South African but since Phat Joe and Mum-z laid their eyes on the Rockwell Theatre, an immediate feeling of patriotic warmth inspired them to create a regular Friday night comedy experience that embodies as many elements of South African culture as possible to create a comedy experience that envelopes any audience member into a full immersion of the essence of South African entertainment.
Imagine stepping into a theatre with murals that personify South Africa’s energy, adorned with colours unmasked by pretentiousness but a simplicity indicative of the very soul of the Capetonian landscape. Imagine indulging in authentic South African cuisine, while being entertained by South Africa’s top comedians and performers. To quench your thirst, you can choose from a selection of hand crafted cocktails named after South African comedy legends or for those of you with a pallet for fermented grapes, you can indulge in world class Capetonian wine.
Social media will be at the core of sharing the experience with the interwebs as audience members will be encouraged to Shazam the DJ’s tracks of South African music so that we not only celebrate South African comedic talent but cherish the sweat of South African musicians who break the mold in the local music industry. Photographs will be taken and shared on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to provide memorable snapshots of audience members enjoying the colourful murals of the Rockwell Theatre with their friends.
Come celebrate South Africa with us every Friday evening at The Rockwell Theatre (Greenpoint) for a night of comedy, unlike any comedy night you may have experienced. State of the art lighting, and sound equipment will be at the heart of creating the ambience that will inspire the cacophony of laughter coupled with the enlightenment of the comedians’ social commentary. The launch night will be on Friday, 25th March 2016.
