ABOUT SCHALK BEZUIDENHOUT
Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in Gauteng in the wonderful city of Johannesburg. Even though this sounds very contemporary, he grew up in a very Afrikaans, ‘bring-terug-Apartheid’ town right next to the airport.
In Kempton Park young Schalkie grew up in a very traditional way. He went to an Afrikaans pre-primary, primary, and high school. The traditional Afrikaans way of living was a good life. Your mother’s breast milk would be brannewyn en coke, you would walk kaalvoet toe school, and you’d hide your lunch money when a black man walked past. But by the age of 10, life started to become more and more difficult for poor old Schalkie.
ABOUT MARTIN DAVIS
Often you will find Martin Davis billed as a UK comic, which implies he is only an occasional visitor to South Africa. He is however a regular here and I suspect he must be an almost permanent expat, who spends some time in the UK each year. That said he is clearly a highly accomplished comedian on both sides of the world, and South Africa can consider itself lucky to have someone of his caliber appearing on our stages as regularly as he does.
There is no one in the country, and I mean no one, who can control a crowd like Martin. His interactions with his audience are legendary and form the backdrop and the vast majority of his set. He has been on stage so long he is easily able to pull any crowd together, by assigning characters to the various people in the audience then shooting out his material referencing them all the time. He seemingly always able to get the reactions he wants and his sharp mind slots his material in, as and when an audience member offers him the opportunity. In the end the audience is laughing at itself merrily as he goes along, targeting everyone, literally daring them to heckle him and giving each audience member the chance to get in on the act.
ABOUT DYLAN SKEWS
Dylan Skews is one of South Africa's fastest rising comedians. Winner of theNandos Comedy Showdown in 2009 and the winner of Phat Joe's comedy showin 2010 where he won the title "Cape Town's next comedian". He recently finished his one man show SKEWS ME which he wrote, directed and performed at on broadway, to rave reveiws and a packed house.
As a trained actor, he laces an effortless charm through performance rich sketches and showcases his signature laid back, yet edgy, performance style and interesting brand of delivery allowing the audience into the hilarious thoughts inside his head. Slipping in and out of elaborate impersonations, twisting and turning through a broad anthology of jokes that range from observational material to his unique life experiences. His style is a newfangled hybrid that bounces between the able one liner hedonist Mitch Hedberg and the outlandish Richard Pryor.
ABOUT MUM-Z
Mum-z is the founder of Comedy On Long and the Cape Town Comedy Strip. He has been performing comedy for 8 years and has won 3 comedy related SAFTA Awards.
