Principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller is also conductor laureate of Symphony Nova Scotia where he was music director for 16 years. He has conducted major international orchestras, where he has been acclaimed for the mastery and magic he brings to podium. Peter Martens, principal cello, one of South Africa’s leading cellists, is acclaimed internationally through CDs and performances. He is also a chamber musician of note, is Director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival and studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Double Piano Concerto

Symphony No. 39 in E flat, K 543

Two of South Africa’s favourite pianists, François du Toit and Albie van Schalkwyk, are collaborating on this concerto in which the writing for two pianos is evenly spread. Both are revered soloists and accompanists, and widely respected teachers. Van Schalkwyk recently retired from UCT, where Du Toit continues to teach. They are joined in the concert by Bernhard Gueller, who is widely praised for his sensitive accompaniment of soloists and his feel for Mozart.
