Richard's Racers

About

Richard’s Racers was started by siblings Liam and Kayla McCulley, inspired by their family’s journey with cancer.

In 2012, we lost our dad, Richard, to brain cancer at just 48 years old. We have also had the privilege of watching our mom overcome breast cancer and celebrate more than 20 years as a cancer survivor.

In 2018, Richard’s Racers first came to life when we took part in the Helderberg Hospice Cycling for Life event. It gave us a way to honour our dad’s memory while doing something positive for others affected by cancer.

After several years away, we revived Richard’s Racers in 2025, this time taking on the Winelands Marathon with a team of runners and supporters. Our first campaign raised funds for Care for Cancer and showed us just how much could be achieved when family, friends and our wider community came together.

We are now excited to take Richard’s Racers further by partnering with Helderberg Hospice and continuing to use running, cycling and other challenges to raise funds and awareness for people affected by cancer.

Our hope is to grow Richard’s Racers into a community that takes on challenges together, supports organisations doing meaningful work, and keeps Richard’s memory at the heart of it all.

For us, every kilometre is about more than the finish line.

It is about remembering where we have come from, supporting people who are still walking their own cancer journey, and turning our family’s experience into something positive.

In memory. In motion. In hope.
