Wits Choir

Wits Choir, from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, continues to stand as one of South Africa’s most diverse and progressive choral ensembles. Based at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, the choir occupies a unique cultural space where tradition and innovation meet, reflecting the vibrancy and complexity of contemporary South Africa.

The choir’s current repertoire is both expansive and thoughtfully curated. It includes traditional and contemporary South African choral works, music from across the African continent, sacred and classical masterworks, as well as selected international compositions. By performing in multiple languages and embracing a wide range of musical styles, the choir presents programmes that honour heritage while engaging present day audiences. New arrangements and fresh interpretations ensure that its performances remain relevant, dynamic, and socially resonant.

Under the leadership of conductors Menzi H. Gumbi and Sasha X. Dladla, the ensemble continues to prioritise artistic excellence and cultural authenticity.
