LIWiS

About

LIWiS provides practical, accessible and CPD-accredited isiXhosa language training for healthcare professionals across South Africa.

The programme helps healthcare professionals communicate more confidently, respectfully and effectively with isiXhosa-speaking patients. Participants learn through short, two-minute videos delivered via WhatsApp every weekday from Monday to Friday.

Lessons focus on practical healthcare communication, including clinical greetings, respectful introductions, pronunciation, patient-centred vocabulary, symptoms, pain, instructions and reassurance. No prior knowledge of isiXhosa is required.

LIWiS is offered and facilitated by Sonwabiso Ngcowa, a UCT PhD student, healthcare researcher, academic writing mentor and published author. His academic and professional work focuses on healthcare delivery, patient experiences, culture and communication in South African healthcare settings.
