Spectrum Circle

About

Welcome to Circle Discussions.

At Spectrum Circle, we believe that the behaviours families find hardest to understand in autism and ADHD start to make sense once you understand the nervous system underneath them. Meltdowns, shutdowns, demand avoidance, masking, stimming and sensory overload are often perceived as defiance or as chosen behaviour.

They are not.

These are physiological events, driven by the autonomic nervous system as it responds to its environment.

That is why we created Circle Discussions.

Circle Discussions are live online seminars about the nervous system in autism and co-occurring autism and ADHD, where we talk about what actually happens inside the body.

The current understanding of autism addresses how the body responds.

Neuroscience asks why it responds. Once we understand why, we can address what the body is responding to, and day-to-day neurodiverse family life becomes more practical.

Circle Discussions are for parents, caregivers, people on the autism spectrum, educators, researchers and practitioners.

The discussions are led by me, Carl Niklaus Wallace. I am a neuroscientist and the founder of Spectrum Circle. I work in cognitive and clinical neuroscience and from my own lived experience with co-occurring Autism and ADHD.

At Spectrum Circle, we believe that when you understand why the body reacts the way it does, you stop managing behaviour from the outside and start supporting the person from the inside.
