About
Soweto Pride 2026 marks 22 years of visibility, protest, and community.
Initiated in 2004 by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), Soweto Pride is not just an event it’s a political statement. It was born from the need to claim space for black lesbian women and LGBTIQA+ people in South African townships to resist erasure, amplify voices, and confront systemic violence and discrimination.
Over two decades, Soweto Pride has grown into a vibrant space of defiance and joy, gathering thousands of queer people and allies in solidarity. It stands as both a celebration of identity and a call to action rooted in the ongoing struggle for safety, freedom, and dignity.
In 2026 we honour our heritage and march into the future. As always, entrance is free, and all are welcome especially those committed to building inclusive, intersectional, and affirming communities.
