Raising Safe Kids in the Age of AI

A Practical Cyber-Safety Workshop for Parents and Caregivers

Event Description

AI chatbots and AI enabled toys are rapidly becoming part of children’s digital experiences.

Many appear harmless. Some promote themselves as friendly companions or learning tools.

Others imitate emotional connection, encourage secrecy, or expose children to inappropriate content.

Parents often do not realise how quickly these systems can influence a child’s behaviour, thinking, or sense of safety.

Join attorney and cyber-safety expert Rene Matthews for a 90 minute interactive workshop designed for

parents, guardians, educators, and anyone responsible for keeping children safe online.

This session provides clear, practical guidance on how to recognise risks and protect your child from harmful AI systems.

You will learn:

• How AI chatbots and companion apps actually work

• How AI enabled toys collect and process children’s data

• Warning signs that a child is forming an unhealthy bond with AI

• Real examples of manipulation, secrecy, and content escalation

• Practical device settings and filtering options for parents

• How to speak to your child about AI in a safe and supportive way

• Your rights as a parent under South African law including POPIA and the Films and Publications Act

This is not a lecture. It is a hands-on, empowering session where you will walk away

with tools you can use immediately to protect your child.
