A sophisticated evening fusing Jazz and Art

Born from an idea that was started in April 2023 when Herbie Tsoaeli, Blessing Ngobeni and Jared Aufrichtig, paid Mongezi Ncaphayi a visit in his studio at the Cape Town Art Residency in Woodstock, Cape Town. This meeting of minds became bigger than anyone thought and was conceptualized to be an event that fused Art and Jazz, together. The concept marries, Jazz as a genre of music that is appreciated by millions of people across the globe. By marrying this beautiful music and Visual Art, we find a sophisticated "take" of creative thinking, a visual jazz presentation as well as some of the finest artists featured in the group show. This event is a first of its kind, allowing the two to blend and dance to the viewers imagination.

The quintessential South African jazzman, Herbie Tsoaeli is a largely self-taught bass virtuoso, born in 1963, in Nyanga East, in Cape Town – one of the more politically - charged, Black townships in the Western Cape. Coming from this community at the forefront of producing South Africa’s rich jazz legacy, Tsoaeli has played a central role in both establishing the country’s jazz tradition and also keeping it alive. He has worked with jazz legends like Winston Mankunku-Ngozi, Tete Mbambisa, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Abdullah Ibrahim to name a few. He is a living legend!

Over the years, Tsoaeli has brought his simplicity and honesty into joyful performances in international and local bars, clubs, concert halls and festivals alongside South Africa’s most gifted players of music. An improviser and lover of the free-jazz ethic, Tsoaeli delights in taking the audience to a creative space of deep feeling -assured, they always return feeling stronger.

Now, he is the first artist and musician to be featured in the Art in Jazz series and we hope you enjoy his music as much as we do!
