SAMA Award winning South African pianist and harmonica virtuoso Adam Glasser with the support of Concerts SA will be touring South Africa in April 2025 collaborating with a variety of SA jazz artists and educational institutions shows and workshops in Johannesburg, Pretoria ( CAFCA), Queenstown, East London and Cape Town.
Glasser will showcase songs from his latest album 'Adam Glasser SA & Beyond' recently released by Gallo Records and available on all streaming platforms.
Leading contemporary pianist Bokani Dyer who features on the album will accompany Glasser live on gigs in Johannesburg and Cape Town ( see separate date list).
Although Glasser is still based in the UK, he has returned constantly over the years collaborating with SA musicians and has appeared at CTIJF, Joy of Jazz, Makhanda Festival, Bushfire Festival eSwati and many workshops round the country.
Adam Glasser Backstory
Growing up in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Glasser moved to the UK in the mid 70s playing with many exiled SA artists touring Spain, Belgium and Italy with Dudu Pukwana's Zila (Glasser's composition August One is featured on the Zila '86 album).
When Manhattan Brothers reformed fo in 1990 for the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert Glasser became their rehearsal pianist and musical director. Highlights of their final 16 years together included performances in Vienna Joe Zawinul Syndicate and the release of the CD Inyembezi which Glasser produced for EMI South Africa in 2006.
UK based South African vocal legends Pinise Saul and David Serame appear on Glasser's SAMA winning CD Free at First ( Best Jazz Album 2010) & SAMA nominated Mzansi ( Nominated Best Jazz Album 2012). Glasser has performed at all major South African jazz festivals and conducted harmonica workshops around the country.
In the UK/Europe he has played piano for Hugh Masekela, Jimmy Witherspoon and Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, harmonica on films & sessions including live gigs with Sting, The Eurythmics and Joe Zawinul Syndicate & BBC Concert Orchestra.
His harmonica has featured in the recordings of Rhythmic Elements, DJ Cleo, Simphiwe Dana and the title track of Abdullah Ibrahim's album 'The Balance'.
Glasser's repertoire is a combination of his own original compositions combined with a distinctive selection of rarely heard outstanding standards from the great South African songbook.
