Durban and coastal mental health

About

In keeping with national Mental Health Month, Durban Coastal Mental Health, (DCMH) established in 1940 has been in existence for 84 years. We have embarked on a unique fundraising initiative. This is an awareness campaign on a national scale to educate the public of the offering and services that are available.

Also to make the public aware that Mental Health’s rehabilitation and diagnosis programmes are fully accessible to them.

Collaborating with the boxing fraternity, we are bringing to the public a fun filled exhibition of boxing, Gyming, Fitness Training and a Title Boxing Match.

Since the post covid pandemic, the reality has finally set in with regards to addressing the uniquely South African phenomenon of social upheaval, political uncertainty, high crime rate, rise in unemployment, climate change and increase in health defects. These combined elements have resonated to mentally imbalanced citizens from all walks of life.

However, help is available.

-Currently Durban and Coastal Mental Health stats are as follows: -

-309 Residents in our 7 Residential Centres.

-660 Service Users in our 7 Protective Training Workshops.

-158 Children with Profound and Severe Intellectual Disabilities in our 7 Day Care Centres.

-24000 Beneficiaries in our Social Work Programme, through our Treatment, Preventative, Promotion of Mental Health and Community Development Programmes across 14 districts.

-In the past year we reached a total of 25927 beneficiaries. 99% of our reach are Black Beneficiaries as defined in the Employment Equity Act

This unique Fundraising will not only raise funds for much needed beds for people living with mental disabilities. It will create a Sporting Platform for both amateur and Semi Pro Boxers who are zealous to participate in friendly boxing matches, thereby stimulating growth of the sport.
