About

Welcome to the Barefoot Capital!

A visit to the Barefoot Capital feels easy. It’s meeting friends for sundowners on the Island, cruising up the Kariega or barging up the Bushmans to spot some game, swimming in Mermaid’s Pool, or heading out on a walk to Kwaaihoek. It’s that favourite T-shirt, going barefoot anywhere in the village, and taking things as they come.

Whether you’re here for the first time or returning again, it doesn’t take long to feel at home. Most of all, it’s about spending time with the people who matter most – and making space for new memories along the way.

It’s also a place where things slow down naturally — where time outdoors, open space, and fresh perspective have a way of bringing you back to yourself.

The Place

Kenton-on-Sea is known for its natural beauty and unique setting, making it as appealing for a short break as it is for a longer stay. Just across the river lies the village of Boesmansriviermond, with narrow streets shaded by milkwood trees. A scenic 2.5 km walk from the Bushmans River Mouth along the beach leads to Kwaaihoek, with a further 2.5 km to the historic Diaz Cross.

Nestled between the Kariega and Bushmans rivers, Kenton offers a remarkable stretch of coastline and a nature reserve rich in wildlife. Both rivers, flanked by game reserves, lend themselves to a range of outdoor experiences. The Bushmans River stretches for 32 km and the Kariega for 16 km, offering opportunities for paddling, cruising, water-skiing, or simply drifting with the tide. Along the way, birdlife is abundant, and wildlife sightings are part of the experience.

A walk between the two rivers reveals caves, rock pools, and quiet bays shaped by striking formations. The tides and light shift constantly, creating a landscape that always feels a little different. Snorkel at Blue Pool, cast a line at Rocking Horse, swim at Sidney’s Hope, or spend time watching whales and dolphins from the cliffs at Shelly Bay.

Wellness, Naturally

Here, wellness isn’t something you have to seek out — it’s part of everyday life. Morning swims, long beach walks, time on the river, and quiet moments in nature all play their part. It’s a place to reset, reconnect, and breathe a little deeper.

The Lifestyle

The Village Centre has a steady rhythm of its own. Mornings often begin with a coffee and a catch-up, while weekends see people heading for the beach or gathering at one of the local spots to eat and unwind. Along Kenton Road, you’ll find a mix of established and emerging artists, alongside a selection of independent shops and small businesses that add to the character of the village.

"What an experience to drink wine in different glasses (Riedel) and taste the difference. Definitely an eye opener! "

"An incredible evening of talent, song, dance and good wine. Ma’s Kitchen food was outstanding, unfortunately cannot say the same for the pasta lady. The pasta was tasteless and expensive for the portion size. Neither chilli nor anchovies were evident on the tastebuds. The venue was great, loved the concept of the band on the truck, pity rain cut the evening short. "

"This festival is one of the highlights in my social calendar. Please, please be sure to book the Kerry cheese stand next year - it is so helpful to have something to line my tummy, and the marketing girls are so lovely. Not sure why it was split in two venues this year - I prefer to meander through the fishing, tennis and then bowls club and then all the way back to place my orders. I would have loved that there was live music - I think that this would add an extra something special. "
