Project Sky Island:

Exploring life on the uncomfortable edge

At the end of January, the quest to uncover Africa's ancient natural wonders begins. Casabio CEO and botanist, Dr David Gwynne-Evans will be departing from Cape Town on a two-year traverse of Africa. Together with Shereen Young and Chris Wiehe they will focus on exploring the survivors of past extinction events: the conifers of Africa that have survived over 300 million years. The journey will take them from the Cedarberg in the Cape, to the Pencil Cedar on Mt Kilimanjaro via the cliffs of Mt Mulanje in Malawi where the last mature Cedar trees are extinct in the wild. In addition they will document life on the highest mountains of 23 African countries.

At the launch event on the 23rd of January, David Gwynne-Evans will be presenting images of some of his greatest discoveries of the last 20 years of investigating plants on the African continent. You can see the kitted out vehicle they'll be traveling in. In addition we shall hear from Shereen Young about their plans for traversing Africa and how to follow their route.
